Acting Out! But in a Good Way is a research project that offers workshops that use theatre and other visual arts-based practices to Indigenous youth in the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council (FHQTC) and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) areas. In these workshops, we play theatre games, construct images, and create short plays to examine the choices that affect health and wellness. The games provide youth with an opportunity to practice leadership and to test different behaviours. Youth who have participated in our workshops tell us that they help develop self-esteem.
Over the course of the workshops, the youth teach the researchers about their views on health and wellness and about the challenges they face on the path to become healthy adults. The workshops create the conditions for youth to become health researchers who better understand the choices they make and their consequences.
To date, over 250 youth in the FHQTC and LLRIB area have participated in our workshops.
Exploring and Re-creating Indigenous Identity through Theatre-based Workshops has been accepted into Spectrum.
